Disclosure: the games in this article were developed by the operator of this site, Free Game Com (indie developer Masimaro). They are free browser games.
"I want a quick game of free Othello." "I want to practice against the CPU." For anyone like that, here are two Othello (reversi) games you can play in your browser.
"Othello" is a registered trademark of MegaHouse Corporation. The games introduced on this page are published as "reversi", with the same rules.
Key points
- Two free browser Othello (reversi) games
- 3D Reversi: CPU and 2-player matches, three difficulty levels, drag to rotate the board
- Kingdom Reversi: reversi with special stones, in a strategy-simulation style
- Winning tips: take corners, and don't play next to a corner
Basic rules of Othello (reversi)
- You place a stone on the board, and when you sandwich the opponent's stones between your stones vertically, horizontally or diagonally, the sandwiched stones turn to your color.
- You must place on a square where you can flip at least one stone. If there's nowhere to place, you pass.
- When the board is full (or neither player can place), the player with more stones wins.
1. 3D Reversi: Ember vs Frost
"Flip the light and take the board." A 3D reversi game fought with two colors of stones, Ember (fire) and Frost (ice).
- Opponent: the CPU, or 2 players. Against the CPU you can choose from Easy, Normal and Hard.
- First and second move: Ember moves first. You choose your color before starting.
- Controls: tap a glowing square. During a game, drag to rotate the board, and scroll or pinch to zoom.
- Handy features: Undo, Restart and a view switch (View). When there's nowhere to place, you pass automatically.
- Ranking: when you beat the CPU, your score is (1000 + stone difference x 100) x a strength multiplier. Records are saved only on this device.
- Graphics: three levels, Low (lightest), Medium and High. If it runs heavy, set it to Low. Supports Japanese and English.
The tutorial teaches you the basic rules, and that a corner stone can never be flipped, the strongest square, by having you actually play it.
2. Kingdom Reversi: strategy reversi with special stones
Billed as a "strategy simulation", it's reversi with special rules added.
- Modes: Free Battle, Dungeon and Ranking. It also has a tutorial and a continue feature.
- Normal stones (infantry): ordinary stones that sandwich and flip enemy stones.
- Special stones: a stone that counts as two stones when the winner is decided, a stone that can destroy an enemy stone and take its place, a powerful stone that doesn't change color when sandwiched, and a stone that can be placed on any square or corner without sandwiching.
- Special stones that can be placed without sandwiching require 10 or more of your stones on the board.
Once you're used to ordinary reversi, you can play with rules that feel a little different.
3 tips for winning at Othello (reversi)
- Take corners: corner stones can't be flipped. Securing a corner puts you at an advantage.
- Don't play next to a corner carelessly: placing on the square diagonally next to a corner (the so-called X-square) makes it easy for your opponent to take the corner.
- Don't take too many stones early: the player with more stones at the end wins. It's well known to take fewer stones early so you don't give your opponent more places to play.
Note: the tips above are generally known opening and strategy ideas. They don't guarantee a win.
