"I'm looking for a game with kanji." "I want a slightly unusual kanji game." For anyone like that, here are two free kanji games. (Kanji are the Chinese-derived characters used in Japanese. Both games are in Japanese.)
Key points
- Kanji Fighter: enter one kanji and it fights automatically in a win-streak knockout
- A character's stroke count, symmetry and meaning (fire, gold, flower, samurai and so on) change its abilities and looks
- Jukugo Match: a puzzle where you swap two adjacent characters to form compound words
- Both are free in your browser with no installation
1. Kanji Fighter: the kanji you enter fight each other on their own
Enter one kanji and press "Start", and that character fights automatically. The battle is fully automatic. The character's shape and meaning decide its abilities and effects.
How to play
- Enter one kanji (any character you like; you can also choose random).
- One round (60-second limit). It's decided by a KO, or by remaining health when time runs out.
- Win and you move on to the next opponent. It's a win-streak knockout that continues until you lose, and your win count is recorded in an all-time top 10 ranking.
What the character decides
- Stroke count: characters with more strokes and rare characters are stronger (health and attack go up, but they're slower). Characters with few strokes are fragile but quick. Strength is shown as a "rank (S to D)".
- Symmetry: left-right symmetric characters have a solid defense.
- Meaning: elements such as fire and thunder, materials such as gold, silver and iron (a body with a metallic sheen), animals such as dog and cat, nature such as flower and poison, colors such as red and blue, and numbers such as one, hundred and trillion change the look and finishing move. Samurai, martial and warrior characters take a samurai form, and characters such as woman, beauty and love take a female form.
- Rare characters (★) get special effects.
When the special gauge is full, it unleashes a special move automatically. As the streak goes on, your opponents become slightly stronger characters. See how far you can win with the kanji in your own name or your favorite kanji.
2. Jukugo Match: swap characters to form compound words
A kanji puzzle where you swap two adjacent characters to form compound words.
- Tap, then tap the neighboring character (or swipe) to swap.
- If you leave it alone for a while, the places you can move glow as a hint.
- On keyboard, you can also use the arrow keys and Enter.
- Your score, remaining moves and best are shown, and there's a list of compounds and a ranking.
- Supports Japanese and English.
The game includes an explanation of the meaning of each compound (for example, "the sea on the west side of the Japanese archipelago" and "making electricity from sunlight").
Who it's for
- People who like kanji and want to enjoy them through a game.
- People who enjoy watching slightly unusual automatic battles.
- People looking for a quick word puzzle.
Note: how to play and specs are based on the in-game text as of October 29, 2026, and may change with updates. Clearing your browser data may erase your records.
